Linen Armoir

This wasn't a project from scratch but rather purchased from Craigslist and rejuvenated and re-purposed.  When we moved into our new home, there wasn't a dedicated linen closet.  Since we didn't have anywhere to put all of our sheets and towels, we looked into getting an armoir.  These huge pieces of furniture run at least $1-2k brand new so we looked at craigslist.  We found this old armoir for $100 on craiglist.  The previous owner used this piece of furniture as an entertainment center.  They removed the drawers for a DVD player and receiver and they cut a giant hole in the back to accommodate a large TV.

In order to use this thing as an armoir, we sanded down the entire interior by hand - didn't want to buy a sander, but quickly realized it was probably worth the money.  Needless to say, we bought one after this project.  We liked the finish on the outside, so we didn't mess with that.  After the inside was stripped down, I cut a piece of thin plywood to cover the gigantic hole in the back.  Then I added some 2x2's on the sides to hold up each shelf.  The shelves are 3/4" plywood.  After everything was cut and added, we painted it with a nice country blue color.

Since the completion of the project, I've added a small drawer to the vacant area on the bottom left of the inside of the armoir.  We really like the way it turned out and it meets our needs perfectly.  The total cost was about $150 which includes the price of the armoir, sanding materials, some wood, and paint.
